We came home to our newest catch today. Groundhogs are much quieter than raccoons when they are captured. I’m glad that this is the case, because they aren’t nearly as cute as raccoons. It’s hard to be so accepting of something that is basically a big rat, much less a big, screaming rat. Regardless, this one was a medium sized guy. He probably weighed about 15 pounds and was not happy about being trapped. He had ripped his snout up a little bit from trying to force his way out of the trap which made me feel bad for him. He was obviously scared. He did his best to get away as well. I had staked the trap to the ground and he almost chewed through one of the stakes. Pictures below:

Are you sure it’s not just a squirrel? It looks like a squirrel.
They are in the same family. But if this thing was a squirrel it was the King of the Squirrel Kingdom. I’ve seen enough groundhogs in my day to know the difference. :p
It was definitely NOT a squirrel. And while it was quieter than the raccoons, it was also not as cute. I still felt sorry for it in that cage though. I’m glad it’s not the sort of cage that hurts or kills them. That would be awful.
It’s not the cage that hurts them. It’s the repeated blows from the ball peen hammer. That really gets them wound up.
