[Gpsbabel-misc] just found gpsbabel

Hello all !

I just found gpsbabel and am excited to start interfacing with my new Magellan SporTrak Map I just got for geocahing.

I’m running a linux system (Fedora) and am really happy to see some software I can use! THANKS!!

Anyway, I’m on a Dell Latitude laptop which has serial port ttyS4 set up:

# grep ttyS /var/log/messages
Jan 25 12:32:18 dragon kernel: ttyS4 unloaded
Jan 25 12:32:29 dragon kernel: ttyS4 at port 0x4080 (irq = 11) is a 16550A

    Device: /dev/ttyS4

RI 22 9 in 0 Ring Indicator

But when I try to run gpsbabel I seem to have problems:

# /tmp/gpsbabel-1.2.1/gpsbabel -D9 -i magellan -f /dev/ttyS4 -o geo -F /tmp/mag.loc

MAGPROTO: No data received from GPS.

I’ve checked the baud on the GPS and it’s set for 4800. I’ve tried it with the GPS device turned on and turned off, but get the same output.

Any ideas? I don’t really see a whole lot of debugging info, like “trying to establish connection” .. etc… so I’m not sure what the comm error means, or why no data was received.

thanks! david
