Wisdom @ Knox College Commencement

Remember, you cannot be both young and wise. Young people who pretend to be wise to the ways of the world are mostly cynics. Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don’t learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blinder, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us.

Cynics always say no. But saying yes begins things. Saying yes is how things grow. Saying yes leads to knowledge. Yes is for young people. So for as long as you have the strength to, say yes.“

  1. Richard says:

So… really you can’t be cynical and wise. Youthful or otherwise.

  2. AxsDeny says:

Sure you can. Old people have earned the right to be cynical through their wisdom. Generally, young people don’t have life experiences to back up their faux-wisdom. Especially the group of folks that he was addressing. College graduates are ideological. 10 years in the work force will change that. I think the quote makes more sense in the context that it was presented.

  3. Richard says:

I always end up writing things that seem cynical or sarcastic here. I don’t like that. It makes me feel at odds with you when I’m not intending that at all. btw, Did you get the pictures of Sam with the blanket? I didn’t hear back from you.

  4. AxsDeny says:

Found it in my spam folder. Mail.app seems to not like your Yahoo address. I’ve added a rule so that won’t happen anymore.

  5. Bridget says:

Thanks for the pictures Richard! It was so cool to see Sam enjoying the blanket. : )
