Remodeling Recap

After a few comments about my previous post, I thought I should follow up. The last line of the post indicates that the problem with the house was not actually the bathroom. This is true. Fortunately I do not have to rip up what I’ve done. At this point I have chalked up the whole project as a learning experience. The toilet flange did need to be replaced, so it was good that we got that done.

It turns out though, that the damage to the wall and ceiling downstairs is worsening. We had a roofer from Shulteiss Brothers come in and look at it. Roofers are paid to find what is causing a leak. They looked at the inside, the outside, and the corners and the side of the house. They focused on the corner where the problem was occuring and noticed that multiple things were wrong with the way that the siding, flashing, and downspouts. The U channel on the siding was basically allowing water to get in under the shingles and siding. This allowed it to soak through into the area around the ceiling of the first floor hallway. This explains why I was able to poke my finger straight through the drywall. Not cool. I don’t like spackling at midnight.

Anyway, we’re having some work done on the roof over the kitchen, so hopefully that will solve the problem. If it does, I’ll move on to working on some other things in the house.
