Disaster Avoided During Vacation

Bridget, Tara, and I went on a road trip vacation this past weekend. We went to Huntingdon on Thursday to visit Matt and show Tara around Juniata College. Friday we headed to State College to visit Simon and Michelle and do some geocaching in the area. Saturday a little more of the same and then we met up with Caroline and David for some festivities. Sunday we tooled around a bit more and then headed home.

The real story here lies on Friday. We did some caches together then we split up so the girls could do some shopping and I could pick up some more caches. I headed to a micro cache near The Creamery then to a multicache called ‘The Graduate’. I found the first part of the multi, and headed to the second. I got to the area of the cache and searched around for about 10 minutes. I couldn’t find it so I decrypted the hint which read ‘Take a seat’. The coords had led me into an area surrounded by buildings with dozens of people walking around, especially little kids. I was there for about 40 minutes searching on and around a bench (based on the hint) that was there. I felt like I was loitering and I also felt like the parents of the children were watching me with suspicious eyes. I couldn’t blame them.

I was sitting on the bench and I had placed all my gear next to me. 2 cellular phones, the GPS, maps, cache page printouts, digital camera, and my umbrella were next to me. After talking to Steggles who looked up some cache info for me, I decided to check the bench that was opposite the one I was on. I got up and inadvertantly dumped my GPS to the sidewalk as I picked up the cache printout. I picked up the GPS and to my amazement the crystal display had cracked in three places. I turned it on and 1/3 of the display was not visible with the rest having lines running through it. I was not happy. I packed up my stuff and headed back to the car.

p>Today at work I decided to call Garmin and see what options I had for getting it repaired. To my amazement, they said that I could ship it back and they would repair it for free. Now, I’m not a business genius, but this is a great business practice. I have to say that when the rep told me it would be free, I immediately thought that Garmin is the company from which I will purchase all future outdoor equipment. The unit cost me a little over $200 so not having to buy a new one saved me a world of heartache. So, to Garmin, my hat is off.

Thank God……. …you managed to avoid a vacation. Whew! Must have been a close one. I realize you went to Tussey, but grammar, man, grammar.;)

Books… Are there any definitive books or guides on Geocaching? If not, I highly suggest that YOU blaze the trail here. At least a children’s book…

  6. AxsDeny says:

Cha-ching… Wanna be my financial backer? I’m all for it.

  7. JJordan says:

Write the book…… ….and I could probably find a publisher for you. Assuming it doesn’t suck.

  8. AxsDeny says:

On it… Bridget has started fleshing it out already. 😉

Greetings from the Motherland… Hello from Sam Werlenich’s Amish pool dancing bar..Just checking in to say that the guy in the panda suit rocks. How is life in the U.S.? It’s not as hot and heavy as Chuckie Hoover and Hully over here, it’s freezing august weather! People are wearing sweaters and drinking hot tea. It is strange. I refuse to believe the barometer, so I wear summer clothes and freeze my mullet off! Where are Mrs. Buseck’s bally-smoke-infested sweaters when I need one? Take care of your entirely too intelligent self. Hey- James and I are are working on a ‘novel’ (for real)–I’m thinking that we can put in bookshops next to yours and Bridget’s– what do ya think? Be good. -Mandi
